American Medical Innovation and Investment Act of 2024

The American Medical Innovation and Investment Act of 2024 (H.R.8816) was introduced by Representative Vern Buchanan (Republican, Florida) on June 25, 2024.

The bill aims to enhance Medicare coverage and modernize healthcare practices. Key provisions include:

  • Mandating cognitive impairment screening during annual wellness visits and initial preventive exams using National Institute on Aging-approved tools.

  • Improving Medicare coverage determination processes, including limiting the duration of coverage with evidence development to 10 years.

  • Expanding Medicare coverage for external infusion pumps and home infusion drugs, even if they don't meet typical "home use" requirements.

  • Requiring guidance on Medicare payment for AI-enabled remote monitoring devices by 2026.

  • Clarifying Medicare coverage for prescription digital therapeutics, including guidance for physicians and Medicare Advantage organizations.

The bill seeks to streamline healthcare delivery, embrace technological advancements, and improve early detection of cognitive impairments. It represents a significant step towards modernizing Medicare and enhancing patient care through innovative medical technologies.
